Using material found at this site, they sculpted their homes from the soft volcanic rock of the Pajarito Plateau. Hand-held trails carved into the rock allowed them to travel between levels and breathtaking views of the valley below defined their world according to nature's boundaries: the earth and the sky. The Santa Fe Canyon Preserve is a 525-acre oasis, located on Upper Canyon Road, just a few miles from Santa Fe’s historic downtown plaza. Within the preserve are the ruins of Old Stone Dam, built in 1881 and Two-Mile Dam, built in 1893. Years of restoration and conservation work has turned what was once the center of the city’s hydroelectric industry into an oasis with wildflowers, willows, deer and beaver.
